Smart Connections are 3-hour educational sessions that bring together immigrants to the Edmonton area with local business leaders and HR experts. These sessions are usually focused on specific topics related to creating sustainable career paths, whether within or outside their field of expertise.

The sessions are learning and networking opportunities hosted by ERIEC at no charge. ERIEC usually offers Smart Connections once or twice a year as one type of networking program for their clients.

The focus of these sessions is internationally-educated professionals who have recently come to Edmonton and are actively seeking employment. These newcomers are highly qualified but can lack the cultural knowledge of how to successfully seek, apply for, and transition to work in Canada. The knowledge gained through Smart Connections can help these immigrants find employment in work that taps their skills and experience. This provides them with economic stability that benefits their families and the local economy.

By coming to a Smart Connections event, you can expect to:

  • Increase your knowledge of specialized sector-specific Canadian workplace opportunities.
  • Connect directly to employer representatives from the local labour market who present the skills required to succeed in the sector.
  • Talk in small groups and do a self-assessment of core competencies needed to succeed in your job search.
  • Gain vital skills on how to repackage yourself to successfully find an alternate or temporary career path while pursuing re-certification.
