RISE 2011

Edmonton Region Immigrant Employment Council (ERIEC), in partnership with the Edmonton Mennonite Centre for Newcomers (EMCN) and NorQuest College sponsored the 2nd Annual RISE Employer Awards. The awards luncheon took place on May 31, 2011 at the Sutton Place Hotel, and was hosted by Rod Tweddle from ACCESS. RISE Employer Awards honour employers who have enhanced the quality of their workplace through valuing and supporting diversity!

The importance of diversity in our city and our reliance on foreign-trained professionals was highlighted by the Honourable Thomas Lukaszuk, Minister of Employment.

Mayor Stephen Mandel attended and spoke of the importance of the contribution of forward-thinking employers in the growth of our local economy.

Employers from across Edmonton applied for 4 awards that celebrate their commitment and initiatives related to cultural diversity, and employment and support of foreign trained professionals in particular.

Award Recipients:

Diversity Impact Award: Cosyn Technology for its acknowledgement of the positive impact of employing foreign trained newcomers and for its work in demonstrating a return on investment for incorporating diversity practices.

Strategic Leadership Award: All Weather Windows for its leadership in workforce diversity and cultural diversity initiatives that lead to positive outcomes for both the employer and the newcomers it employs.

Outstanding Workplace Award: Deloitte for its cultural diversity practices that help integrate, develop and retain newcomers by creating a welcoming, respectful workplace.

ERIEC Mentoring Award, which recognizes an employer for outstanding contributions in guiding, supporting and promoting the training and career development of internationally educated professionals through mentoring. The recipient of this award is Deloitte.

In addition to the presentation of awards, those in the audience were treated to listen to the EMCN Global Voices Choir, and a moving presentation by Edgar Lanes, former ERIEC Mentee and current employee of ATCO. Edgar’s speech underlined the importance and mutual benefit of hiring foreign trained professionals.
