Adapting Across Cultural Styles Tools

Our workplaces are increasingly diverse because of international migration. Professionals who understand cultural adaptation and the range of cultural styles in our workplaces can be instrumental to organizational success. Join this practical session to learn how to applying the four-stage “Something’s Up” methodology to working in the Canadian interculturally dynamic workplace. Participants will use the Something’s Up approach to investigate three important dynamics of adaptation and apply cultural values models to uncover and make sense of critical incidents and shared personal and professional experiences.

Presenter: Todd Odgers
Todd Odgers is the Associate Dean International at British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) and the former Principal of NorQuest College’s Centre for Intercultural Education (CIE) in Edmonton Canada. Todd has spent his career working in many intercultural intersections through his work in Canada and abroad as a leader, consultant, teacher, and applied researcher. He is currently designing and implementing approaches that will support faculty, staff and leaders at BCIT more effectively engage the range of culturally and linguistically diverse international and new Canadian students and stakeholders on our campuses. For the decade before 2002 he was based primarily in Tokyo leading teams of trainers and consultants working with many leading international and Japanese corporations. He hopes that the tools created from these hard-earned insights and experiences can be of use to meet the challenges we face today and for the future.
