Mentors and mentees are the heart of ERIEC and of our Career Mentorship Program. Last week our Fall cohort began the program. I asked a new mentor from TELUS some questions about her participation in our program. Karen, an HR Recruitment Consultant, was matched with Nimaya, an HR professional from Sudan. You can see them below, with big smiles on their faces at their first meeting!
What’s your name and occupation?
Karen Madi , TELUS – Human Resources, Recruitment Consultant
Why did you choose to get involved in the Career Mentorship Program?
I chose to be a part of the Career Mentorship Program because when my parents came to Canada it was a very similar situation for them. They were skilled and had their degrees in teaching and accounting but had no one to help them. I hope to help Nimaya throughout his journey.
Where did you hear about the program?
Through TELUS
[note: TELUS recently came on board as a corporate partner – We will share more information about that in a future blog!]
What are you and your mentee working on first?
The first thing we are working on is how to build a resume… to make it more reader-friendly.
What would you like people to know about the Career Mentorship Program?
It is a great Program to be a part of! Meeting new people and helping someone in need. You learn so much and build a great connection with your mentee. It’s a great opportunity to build your leadership skills as well.
What would you say to people who are thinking about signing up for the program?
You will be very satisfied when you meet your mentee for the first time and you will learn so much. A great journey!
Is there anything else you’d like to say?
Thank you for allowing me to volunteer! I will be continuing through this program.
We’re very happy to have you Karen! Looking forward to the rest of the program and hearing all about your learning and Nimaya’s successes!
