The Honourable Ahmed Hussen, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) visited the ERIEC earlier today, August 20, 2019.
The Minister acknowledged ERIEC’s efforts in ensuring that internationally trained professionals are welcomed and supported through the mentorship and networking programs that we provide in the Edmonton region. He agreed that by increasing access to both mentorship and networking programs can help to improve employment opportunities for professional immigrants. These programs are vital to the success of internationally trained professionals who now consider Edmonton as their new home.
In addition to the ERIEC staff present, a brief presentation was made by Colin Knoll (mentor) and Ikemefuna Odiachi (mentee). Colin and Ikemefuna both shared their mentor and mentee experiences, as well as the benefits of the program in helping newcomers understand the Canadian workplace environment and business culture. Colin emphasized the benefit of the mentoring experience helped him to improve his leadership skills which are aligned to his passion for coaching and a desire in delivering practical approaches to professional job searches in Canada.
The Minister shared his priorities in supporting rural communities as these groups face additional challenges in attracting and retaining professional and skilled newcomers.
It was a great honor and privilege to host Minister Hussen at the ERIEC office on such a sunny August day!
