As you may be aware, Edmonton is one of several Canadian cities welcoming Syrian refugees as a part of the federal government’s commitment to support the settlement of 25,000 Syrian refugees by the end of February, 2016. Although Edmonton has always been a place where people from all corners of the world have been welcome, the Syrian crisis has raised global awareness as to the need for communities to open their doors and create more welcoming communities for all newcomers.
Over the past several weeks a collection of agencies, community groups, organizations and individuals have come together to support hundreds of new residents to Edmonton. Because of this, on behalf of Mayor Don Iveson, The City of Edmonton hosted a special celebration to welcome our new residents/newcomers to Edmonton, to celebrate their arrival and encourage our new residents to embrace winter!
Last Saturday, February 13, 2016 Edmonton Region Immigrant Employment Council (ERIEC) participated in the Information Fair at Rundle Park – A.C.T. Centre & Rundle Family Centre. We provided information to our new community members about the programs and services available to them at ERIEC.
We are very honoured that we participated and supported this Winter WonderlandWelcome to Edmonton for refugees and helped further demonstrate our city’s tremendous support for these new residents as they settle in Edmonton.
